Born Alfred Hawthorne Hill in Southampton, England, on January 21, 1924, Benny Hill's early life was marked by a diverse range of jobs, from milkman to bridge operator. His grandfather had been a circus clown, hinting at a family predisposition for entertainment. Hill harbored dreams of becoming a comedian, inspired by the likes of Charlie Chaplin and other music hall greats. He adopted the stage name Benny Hill, honoring his favorite comedian, Jack Benny.
