Real writers-that is, capital w writers-rarely make much money. their biggest reward is the occasional reader's response.... commentators-in-print voicing big fat opinions-you might call us small w writers-get considerably more feedback than writers. the letters i personally find most flattering are not the very rare ones that speak well of my editorials, but the occasional reader who wants to know who writes them. i always happily assume the letter-writers is implying that the editorials are so good that i couldn't have written them myself.
Real Writing Letters
Notice how every science fiction movie or television show starts with a shot of the location where the story is about to occur. movies that take place in outer space always start with a shot of stars and a starship. movies that take place on another world always start with a shot of that planet. this is to let you know where you are. novels and stories start the same way. you have to give the reader a sense of where he is and what's happening as quickly as possible. you don't want to start the story by confusing the reader.

The desire for story is very, very deep in human beings. we are the only creature in the world that does this; we are the only creature that tells stories, and sometimes those are true stories and sometimes those are made up stories. then there are the larger stories, the grand narratives that we live in, which are things like nation and family and clan and so on. those stories are considered to be treated reverentially. they need to be part of the way in which we conduct the discourse of our lives and to prevent people from doing something very damaging to human nature.
People Desire World
Writers imagine that they cull stories from the world. i'm beginning to believe that vanity makes them think so. that it's actually the other way around. stories cull writers from the world. stories reveal themselves to us. the public narrative, the private narrative - they colonize us. they commission us. they insist on being told. fiction and nonfiction are only different techniques of story telling. for reasons that i don't fully understand, fiction dances out of me, and nonfiction is wrenched out by the aching, broken world i wake up to every morning.

Yes, we could talk to you for days on end about all the bad first dates. those are stories. funny stories. awkward stories. stories we love to share, because by sharing them, we get something out of the hour or two we wasted on the wrong person. but that's all bad first dates are: short stories. good first dates are more than short stories. they are first chapters. on a good first date, everything is springtime. and when a good first date becomes a relationship, the springtime lingers. even after it's over, there can be springtime.
Two Awkward Stories
I would also suggest that any aspiring writer begin with short stories. these days, i meet far too many young writers who try to start off with a novel right off, or a trilogy, or even a nine-book series. that's like starting in at rock climbing by tackling mt. everest. short stories help you learn your craft.
