I love doing the readings. the readings are the fun bits... the readings are probably the things that actually keep me going on these. if i couldn't do the readings, i wouldn't do the [signing] tours. i get to stand up there and read to a bunch of adults who in many cases nobody's read to in years, since they were about five. they just squat on the floor. that's enormously enjoyable.

I don't want to be like the actor who rehearses everything in the bathroom, then comes to the set and carries on completely uninterrupted while the other actors tiptoe away. i'm so dependent on reacting to the other actors on the set, and to the director. i'm very responsive. i react. and i treasure the energy that reaction gives. i feed off that and work off that. i don't like to be too prepared, no. however we define too prepared, if i feel it's getting that way, then i'll back off. my line-learning is very special. i like to learn the dialogue of the whole film before i arrive.

I've got evil in me as much as anyone, some desires that scare me. even if i don't give in to them, just having them scares the living bejesus out of me sometimes. i'm no saint, the way you kid about. but i've always walked the line, walked that goddamned line. it's a mean mother of a line, straight and narrow, sharp as a razor, cuts right into you when you walk it long enough. you're always bleeding on that line, and sometimes you wonder why you don't just step off and walk in the cool grass.

You can say something that can really help and actor and you can say something that can really get in the way of an actor's performance, kind of cut them off from their instincts and really get into their heads. and every actor's different. every actor requires something different. being an actor, for me, was the greatest training to be a writer and director.
