Every first-rate editor i have ever heard of reads, edits and rewrites every word that goes into his publication.... good editors are not 'permissive'; they do not let their colleagues do 'their thing'; they make sure that everybody does the 'paper's thing.' a good, let alone a great editor is an obsessive autocrat with a whim of iron, who rewrites and rewrites, cuts and slashes, until every piece is exactly the way he thinks it should have been done.

Reading is everything. reading makes me feel like i've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. reading makes me smarter. reading gives me something to talk about later on. reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. reading is grist. reading is bliss.

Regardless of how it's done, transaction costs will continue to plummet as computers get more powerful. low transaction costs are a wonderful thing if you're in the transaction business. they're wonderful for consumers too, making it cheaper and easier to buy things and creating new things to buy.

Reading with an eye towards metaphor allows us to become the person we’re reading about, while reading about them. that’s why there is symbols in books and why your english teacher deserves your attention. ultimately, it doesn’t matter if the author intended the symbol to be there because the job of reading is not to understand the author’s intent. the job of reading is to use stories as a way into seeing other people as a we ourselves.

Good composition is like a suspension bridge; each line adds strength and takes none away... making lines run into each other is not composition. there must be motive for the connection. get the art of controlling the observer – that is composition.

We consider christmas as the encounter, the great encounter, the historical encounter, the decisive encounter, between god and mankind. he who has faith knows this truly; let him rejoice.
