The only way to be a champion is by going through these forced reps and the torture and pain. that's way i call it the torture routine. because it's like forced torture. torturing my body. what helps me is to think of this pain as pleasure. pain makes me grow. growing is what i want. therefore, for me pain is pleasure. and so when i am experiencing pain i'm in heaven. it's great. people suggest this is masochistic. but they're wrong. i like pain for a particular reason. i don't like needle's stuck in my arm. but i do like the pain that is necessary to be a champion.

My life is routine. i wake up early in the morning. i brush my teeth. i sit on the floor of the cell i do not go to breakfast. i stare at a gray cement wall. i keep my legs crossed my back straight my eyes forward. i take deep breaths in and out, in and out, and i try not to move. i sit for as long as i can i sit until everything hurts i sit until everything stops hurting i sit until i lose myself in the gray wall i sit until my mind becomes as blank as the gray wall. i sit and i stare and i breathe. i sit and i stare. i breathe.

I love jazz. so to me, there are two main types of jazz. there's dancing jazz, and then there's listening jazz. listening jazz is like thelonius monk or john coltrane, where it's a listening experience. so that's what i like; i like to make stuff that you listen to. it's not really meant to get you up; it's meant to get your mind focused. that's why you sit and listen to jazz. you dance to big band or whatever, but for the most part, you sit and listen to jazz. i think it comes from that aesthetic, trying to take that jazz listening experience and put it on hip-hop.

African tradition deals with life as an experience to be lived. in many respects, it is much like the eastern philosophies in that we see ourselves as a part of a life force; we are joined, for instance, to the air, to the earth. we are part of the whole-life process. we live in accordance with, in a kind of correspondence with the rest of the world as a whole. and therefore living becomes an experience, rather than a problem, no matter how bad or how painful it may be.

You have to stand up and be a human. you have to honor the man or woman that you are. respect your body, enjoy your body, love your body, feed, clean, and heal your body. exercise and do what makes your body feel good. this is a puja to your body, and that is a communion between you and god. . . . when you practice giving love to every part of your body, you plant seeds of love in your mind, and when they grow, you will love, honor, and respect your body immensely.
