The attitude of the west and of russia towards a crisis like ukraine is diametrically different. the west is trying to establish the legality of any established border. for russia, ukraine is part of the russian patrimony. a russian state was created around kiev about 1,200 years ago. ukraine itself has been part of russia for 500 years, and i would say most russians consider it part of russian patrimony. the ideal solution would be to have a ukraine like finland or austria that can be a bridge between these two rather than an outpost.

In the islamic world, the u.s. is seen in two quite different ways. one view recognizes what an extraordinary country the u.s. is.the other view is of the official united states, the united states of armies and interventions. the united states that in 1953 overthrew the nationalist government of mossadegh in iran and brought back the shah. the united states that has been involved first in the gulf war and then in the tremendously damaging sanctions against iraqi civilians. the united states that is the supporter of israel against the palestinians.

People talk about smart sanctions and crippling sanctions. ive never seen smart sanctions, and crippling sanctions cripple everyone, including innocent civilians, and make the government more popular.

We should fulfill the minsk protocol. the main reason for the sanctions is that russia broke a taboo: it triggered a war in europe. crimea is a problem, but the most painful part of the sanctions is tied to the war in the donbas. as soon as russia takes real steps to prevent shots from being fired there, this part of the sanctions will be lifted.

So, i think that for the authorities to say now that calling for sanctions will prevent dialogue is a ploy to stop us from supporting sanctions. it has to be the other way around: dialogue first, then we stop our call for sanctions, because sanctions make people understand that you cannot exercise repression and at the same time expect international support.
