We talk about social service, service to the people, service to humanity, service to others who are far away, helping to bring peace to the world - but often we forget that it is the very people around us that we must live for first of all. if you cannot serve your wife or husband or child or parent - how are you going to serve society? if you cannot make your own child happy, how do you expect to be able to make anyone else happy? if all our friends in the peace movement or of service communities of any kind do not love and help each other, whom can we love and help?

Many times when people have a vision, they think in terms of a big vision - i want to take my city for christ. but the problem with many pastors and this type of vision is this: they haven't developed the strategy to fulfill that vision. a pastor preaches a dream or vision to his/her people, they get excited for a week, a month, or a couple of months, but there is no strategy, planning, or process to fulfill that vision.

The savior taught his disciples, 'for whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it' (luke 9:24)."i believe the savior is telling us that unless we lose ourselves in service to others, there is little purpose to our own lives. those who live only for themselves eventually shrivel up and figuratively lose their lives, while those who lose themselves in service to others grow and flourish—and in effect save their lives.

It requires something more than personal experience to gain a philosophy or point of view from any specific event. it is the quality of our response to the event and our capacity to enter into the lives of others that help us to make their lives and experiences our own. in my own case my convictions have derived and developed from events in the lives of others as well as from my own experience. what i have seen meted out to others by authority and repression, economic and political, transcends anything i myself may have endured.

Frequently, we busily search for group service projects, which are surely needed and commendable, when quiet, personal service is also urgently needed. sometimes the completing of an occasional group service project ironically salves our consciences when, in fact, we are constantly surrounded by a multitude of opportunities for individual service. in serving, as in true worship, we need to do some things together and some things personally. our spiritual symmetry is our own responsibility, and balance is so important.

The first step toward creating an improved future is developing the ability to envision it. vision will ignite the fire of passion that fuels our commitment to do whatever it takes to achieve excellence. only vision allows us to transform dreams of greatness into the reality of achievement through human action. vision has no boundaries and knows no limits. our vision is what we become in life.
