Speed is the form of ecstasy the technical revolution has bestowed on man. as opposed to a motorcyclist, the runner is always present in his body, forever required to think about his blisters, his exhaustion; when he runs he feels his weight, his age, more conscious than ever of himself and of his time of life. this all changes when man delegates the faculty of speed to a machine: from then on, his own body is outside the process, and he gives over to a speed that is noncorporeal, nonmaterial, pure speed, speed itself, ecstasy speed.

Sports is a perfect activity in which to see streaks and cycles, organizational and otherwise, in action - and to watch confidence build or erode. there are repeated episodes of performance with similar rules and clear winners or losers. i added team sports to my studies of business because there are excellent parallels to work groups in the performance of sports teams and also excellent parallels to larger, more complex businesses or organizations in the strategy, structure, and culture surrounding any particular team.

When a child signs up for tennis, he or she is put on a team. i put them in a circle and then i make sure they name their own team. i would have them do their skill drills as a team and their fun drills together as a team, then they have to have a match at the end of every week. they can't just have what they call a lesson today every week.

The last few years i became a lot more into sports. growing up, the sports i liked were independent sports, like skateboarding. i was really into skateboarding, and not necessarily team televised sports.

I can't imagine where i'd be without the opportunities provided to me in sports. sports taught me that gender isn't an issue; in fact, when people talk about me being the first female governor, i'm a little absent from that discussion, because i've never thought of gender as an issue. in sports, you learn self-discipline, healthy competition, to be gracious in victory and defeat, and the importance of being part of a team and understanding what part you play on that team. you all work together to reach a goal, and i think all of those factors come into play in my role as governor.

It's too much pressure. you have to think match by match and moment by moment or it drives you to distraction. i'm tired of all the talk about it. everyone is obsessed with it...if i was the type of person who had tennis, tennis, tennis all the time and i went to bed and ended up dreaming about tennis, i would go nuts.
