We do not become righteous by doing righteous deed but, having been made righteous, we do righteous deeds.

Great winds and storms help fruit-bearing trees. so also do corruptions and temptations help the fruitfulness of grace and holiness. the storm loosens the earth round its roots so the tree is able to get its roots deeper into the earth, where it receives fresh supplies of nourishment. but only much later will it be seen to bring forth better fruit. so corruptions and temptations develop the roots of humility, self-abasement and mourning in a deeper search for that grace by which holiness grows strong. but only later will there be visible fruits of increased holiness.

There are three levels of service. the highest level is that of one who performs good deeds the whole day and yet feels that he has not acheived anything. the second level is someone who, though he has not done anything, knows that he has not corrected anything in this world. this is good, and there is hope for him that he might correct his ways. however, someone who is righteous in his own eyes deceived himself all his life; his good deeds will be lost.

We are a church of sinners but we must not be afraid of holiness. do not be afraid to aim for holiness and turn yourselves over to the love of god. holiness does not mean performing extraordinary things but carrying out daily things in an extraordinary way that is with love, joy and faith.

What we have in the bush team is a faith-based administration. it launched a faith-based war in iraq, on the basis of faith-based intelligence, with a faith-based plan for iraqi reconstruction, supported by faith-based tax cuts to generate faith-based revenues.
