Is this what you have in mind,' i asked the dalai lama, 'when you say in teachings that the buddhas and bodhisattvas of the world are the most selfish beings of all, that by cultivating altruism they actually achieve ultimate happiness for themselves?' yes. that's wise selfish,' he replied. 'helping others not means we do this at our own expense. not like this. buddhas and bodhisattvas, these people very wise. all their lives they only want one thing: to achieve ultimate happiness. how to do this? by cultivating compassion, by cultivating altruism.
Wise Selfish Teaching
If the heart be chiefly and directly fixed on god, and the soul engaged to glorify him, some degree of religious affection will be the effect and attendant of it. but to seek after affection directly and chiefly; to have the heart principally set upon that; is to place it in the room of god and his glory. if it be sought, that others may take notice of it, and admire us for our spirituality and forwardness in religion, it is then damnable pride; if for the sake of feeling the pleasure of being affected, it is then idolatry and self-gratification.

Right from the moment of our birth, we are under the care and kindness of our parents, and then later on in our life when we are oppressed by sickness and become old, we are again dependent on the kindness of others. since at the beginning and end of our lives we are so dependent on other's kindness, how can it be in the middle that we would neglect kindness towards others?

Religion consists much in holy affection; but those exercises of affection which are most distinguishing of true religion are these practical exercises. friendship between earthly friends consists much in affection; but those strong exercises of affection that actually carry them through fire and water for each other are the highest evidences of true friendship.

Perhaps the most significant thing a person can know about himself is to understand his own system of values. almost every thing we do is a reflection of our own personal value system. what do we mean by values? our values are what we want out of life. no one is born with a set of values. except for our basic physiological needs such as air, water, and food, most of our values are acquired after birth.

My main interest is in the promotion of human values. from birth we have a sense of affection and some sense of concern for others. we need to nurture it. scientists have found that to ensure even physical health peace of mind is essential. people often think that love and compassion are only matters of religious concern, but in fact such values are necessary in all human relations
