Many people are under the delusion that i'm just a special-effects man, but i've worn many different hats in my day. on every film i've been involved in, i worked with the writer and producer. we really formulated those scripts. we tried to make films that were logical but still had the fantasy feel of it. i enjoy aardman animation's films with wallace and gromit, but they're obvious puppet films, whereas we tried to disguise it and make our effects characters in the films rather than obvious puppets.

I don't know what of our culture is going to survive, or if we survive. if you look at the greek plays, they're really good. and there's just a handful of them. well, how good would they be if there were 2,500 of them? but that's the future looking back at us. anything you can think of, there's going to be millions of them. just the sheer number of things will devalue them. i don't care whether it's art, literature, poetry or drama, whatever. the sheer volume of it will wash it out. i mean, if you had thousands of greek plays to read, would they be that good? i don't think so.

In my view the plangent artificiality of a lot of creative work results from the fact that the people who write novels, direct films and put on plays tend to read too many novels, watch too many films and go to too many plays.

I think all writers of my age who are brought up on films probably by the age of 16 have seen many more films than they have read classics of literature. we can't help but be influenced by film. film has got some great tricks that it's taught writers.

There's something that happens where you go, if you're lucky, goodness me, from film to another film to another film. and you can sort of feel that if you step off that treadmill, it might all go horribly wrong and you might never be employed again, you know. and i suddenly thought that that's not necessarily the case. and i also thought we make drama as actors about people in the world and that if you are on that treadmill, you start making films about other films.
