There were two recording studios in bellingham. one was really expensive, a "nice studio." we were at the point where we were young and irreverent. we would scoff at the idea of a nice studio. "why would you want to go to a nice studio? oh wow, they have really expensive gear. ooh, that's really fancy. well we've got an eight-track. we've got it going on here." now that we have the resources, we're like, "oh wow, a nice studio is pretty nice! they do have nice outboards here. it's actually a pretty good place." it's funny how much changes so quickly.
Nice Irreverent
Do we need to make a special effort to enjoy the beauty of the blue sky? do we have to practice to be able to enjoy it? no, we just enjoy it. each second, each minute of our lives can be like this. wherever we are, any time, we have the capacity to enjoy the sunshine, the presence of each other, even the sensation of our breathing. we don't need to go to china to enjoy the blue sky. we don't have to travel into the future to enjoy our breathing. we can be in touch with these things right now.

I always say people would rather be nice than right. i like to be nice too, but come on. people frequently ask me, what is my definition of politically correct. my answer is always the same: the elevation of sensitivity over truth. people would rather be nice than right, rather be sensitive than true. well, being nice and sensitive are important, but they're not more important than being right; they're not more important than the truth.
Nice People Important
Most of the nations that have serious gardening cultures have, or had, empires. you can't have this luxury of pleasure without somebody paying for it. this is nice to know. it's nice to know that when you sit down to enjoy a plate of strawberries, somebody got paid very little so that you could have your strawberries. it doesn't mean the strawberries will taste different, but it's nice to enjoy things less than we do. we enjoy things far too much, and it leads to incredible pain and suffering.
Pain Nice Mean
In the end it all comes down to talent. you can talk all you want about intangibles, i just don't know what that means. talent makes winners, not intangibles. can nice guys win? sure, nice guys can win - if they're nice guys with a lot of talent. nice guys with a little talent finish fourth, and nice guys with no talent finish last.
Nice Mean Winning
I say this in the book [today matters], we either spend our day repairing or preparing, and if i haven't taken good care of my today's, they accumulate. so all of a sudden today what i'm doing is i'm going back, i'm repairing bad relationships and wrong decisions, and i'm digging a hole. i'm not making any progress because i'm in a repairing mode, versus if i really make today count that prepares me for tomorrow. tomorrow really will take care of itself if i do the right thing today.
