What will solve our problems is a specific set of ideas built on bedrock principles that made america the greatest nation to begin with and applying those principles to the unique challenges of this new century. and those principles are not complicated. it begins with a notion that this nation was founded on a powerful spiritual principle, that our rights do not come from government. our rights do not come from our laws. our rights do not come from our leaders. our rights come from god.

We should remember that the declaration of independence is not merely a historical document. it is an explicit recognition that our rights derive not from the king of england, not from the judiciary, not from government at all, but from god. the keystone of our system of popular sovereignty is the recognition, as the declaration acknowledges, that 'all men are created equal' and 'endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights.' religion and god are no alien to our system of government, they're integral to it.

We hear in these days a great deal respecting rights--the rights of private judgment, the rights of labor, the rights of property, and the rights of man. rights are grand things, divine things in this world of god's; but the way in which we expound these rights, alas! seems to me to be the very incarnation of selfishness. i can see nothing very noble in a man who is forever going about calling for his own rights. alas! alas! for the man who feels nothing more grand in this wondrous, divine world than his own rights.

There is nothing so bad or so good that you will not find englishmen doing it; but you will never find an englishman in the wrong. he does everything on principle. he fights you on patriotic principles; he robs you on business principles; he enslaves you on imperial principles; he bullies you on manly principles; he supports his king on loyal principles and cuts off his king's head on republican principles.

There's never been a nation like the united states, ever. it begins with the principles of our founding documents, principles that recognize that our rights come from god, not from our government - principles that recognize that because all of us are equal in the eyes of our creator, all life is sacred at every stage of life.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, that to secure these rights governments are instituted among men. we...solemnly publish and declare, that these colonies are and of a right ought to be free and independent states...and for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honour.
