What's been important in my understanding of myself and others is the fact that each one of us is so much more than any one thing. a sick child is much more than his or her sickness. a person with a disability is much, much more than a handicap. a pediatrician is more than a medical doctor. you're much more than your job description or your age or your income or your output.

And when it comes to developing the high standards we need, it's time to stop working against our teachers and start working with them. teachers don't go in to education to get rich. they don't go in to education because they don't believe in their children. they want their children to succeed, but we've got to give them the tools. invest in early childhood education. invest in our teachers and our children will succeed.

We're the only developed country in the world that doesn't have paid maternity leave. paternity leave is just as important. paid family medical leave so that you can take care of a parent, a child, a grandparent, whatever you need to do. i think we're shortsighted when we don't invest in our employees as companies, and as an economy, because we invest in them and they invest back in us.

I went away and cried to the master of the universe, "what have you done to me? a mind like this i need for a son? a heart i need for a son, a soul i need for a son, compassion i want from my son, righteousness, mercy, strength to suffer and carry pain, that i want from my son, not a mind without a soul!"

We have to invest in our kids, we have to invest in our communities, we have to create jobs. we have to make certain that kids are not dropping out of school and hanging out on street corners.
