There is really no reason to suffer. the only reason you suffer is because you choose to suffer. if you look at your life you will find many excuses to suffer, but a good reason to suffer you will not find. the same is true for happiness. the only reason you are happy is because you choose to be happy. happiness is a choice, and so is suffering.

So often, we blame other people when, really, the problem is right down in here. i'm not happy. i don't know what's wrong. if i just had another job, i could be happy. if i just get married, i would be happy. well if i just wasn't married, i would be happy. well, if i just had some kids, i'll be happy. i'll be happy when these kids finally grow up and get out of here. if i had a bigger house, i would be happy. well, i got a big house. now if i just had a maid to clean, i'd be happy. well, now if i just had a maid i could get along with better, i'd be happy.

Suffering, if you're a christian, suffering is a part of life. and it's not a bad thing, it is an essential thing in life... there are all different ways to suffer. one way to suffer is through lack of food and shelter and there's another way to suffer which is lack of dignity and hope and there's all sorts of ways that people suffer and it's not just tangible, it's also intangible and we have to consider both.

When we have anger in us, we suffer. when we have discrimination in us, we suffer. when we have the complex of superiority, we suffer. when we have the complex of inferiority, we suffer also. so when we are capable of transforming these negative things in us, we are free and happiness is possible.

Oh god, are there so many of them in our land! students who can’t be happy until they’ve graduated, servicemen who can’t be happy until they are discharged, single folks who can’t be happy until they’ve found a mate, workers who can’t be happy until they’ve retired, adolescents who aren’t happy until they’re grown, ill people who aren’t happy until they’re well, failures who aren’t happy until they succeed, restless who can’t wait until they get out of town, and in most cases, vice versa, people waiting, waiting for the world to begin.

If we develop concern for other people's welfare, share other people's suffering, and help them, ultimately we will benefit. if we think only of ourselves and forget about others, ultimately we will lose. the more we care for the happiness of others, the greater our own sense of well-being becomes.
