I've stayed in so many hotel rooms that i'm shocked if, when i stay in a hotel room, the hotel phone isn't on the desk. then i'm like, "this isn't a real hotel room." if there's not outlets next to the desk, or if they have an iphone adapter for an iphone 4, that's when i'm sitting there annoyed. i understand that it's ridiculous, but that's just me spending way too much time in hotels.

While we were shooting the movie, we shot in the actual hotel in hong kong where it all went down, the mira hotel. laura poitras was coming to hong kong to do a screening of citizenfour, and she ended up staying at the mira hotel. it was her first time back in hong kong, and i ran into her in the elevator. literally i had just finished shooting one day, and i came back to the hotel and she was in the elevator.

She left me the way people leave a hotel room. a hotel room is a place to be when you are doing something else. of itself it is of no consequence to one's major scheme. a hotel room is convenient. but its convenience is limited to the time you need it while you are in that particular town on that particular business; you hope it is comfortable, but prefer, rather, that it be anoymous. it is not, after all, where you live.

Myspace is somehow more welcoming than facebook. and twittering, i just... ugh. i like having radio silence. i think radio silence is an important part of any public figure's day. we haven't seen it yet, but there's going to be a generation that comes up where the new trend will be complete anonymity. it'll be cool to have never posted anything online, commented, opened a webpage or a myspace. i think everyone in the future is going to be allowed to be obscure for 15 minutes. you'll have 15 minutes where no one is watching you, and then you'll be shoved back onto your reality show.

Most of the time, if you're not really paying attention, you're someplace else. so your child might say, "daddy, i want this," and you might say, "just a minute, i'm busy." now that's no big deal-we all get busy, and kids frequently ask for attention. but over your child's entire youth, you may have an enormous number of such moments to be really, fully present, but because you thought you were busy, you didn't see the opportunities these moments presented. . . . people carry around an enormous amount of grief because they missed the little things.

All i did was collect a few of the questions i've been asked through the years, write up a brief response and put them in this publication. as a pastor, you get asked questions and receive emails. many of them i had answered, but just in conversation. so we kind of re-crafted the question and answered it. it turned out to be an interesting exercise. i hope it's encouraging for people.
