The things had been made a half a dozen times from silent pictures through the '30s and '40s. in fact, i think there's a version in the '50s. and then, of course, spielberg eventually did a version of the lost world, but this [filming] was '91, i think. and we shot it in zimbabwe.

There were no horror movies or horror books to speak of in the '40s. i picked the '50s because that pretty well spans my life as an appreciator - as somebody who's been involved with this mass cult of horror, from radio and movies and saturday matinees and books. in the '40s there really wasn't that much. people don't want to read about horrible things in horrible times. so, in the '40s, there was val lutin with the cat people and the curse of the cat people and there wasn't much else.

Go back to the '30s, '40s, '50s, and it was the discovery of heroic interventions, the ability to cure people with penicillin or do an operation to stop disease that was what saved the day. primary care physicians couldn't do all that much that really demonstrated a difference. the people who control and work with you to control your blood pressure, they're not rewarded for doing that or to be innovative about doing that. so, the result is half of americans have uncontrolled high blood pressure, despite seeing clinicians.

I am no fun at all. in fact, i am anti-fun. not as in anti-violence, but as in anti-matter. i am not so much against fun - although i suppose i kind of am - as i am the opposite of fun. i suck the fun out of a room. or perhaps i'm just a different kind of fun; the kind that leaves on bereft of hope; the kind of fun that ends in tears.

I'm not ashamed of any of my papers at all and i'm rather sick of snobs that tell us that they're bad papers, snobs who only read papers that no one else wants. i doubt if they read many papers at all.

When you're looking for stories or movies usually the great stories are about people in their 30s or 40s because they've lived more life and they're usually accomplishing more incredible things. but when there's an interesting story about someone that's your age, you immediately - especially when you're younger - are like, "wow that's crazy! there's not very many of these."
