I wonder why anyone would hesitate to be generous with their writing. i mean, if you really want to make a living, go to wall street and trade oil futures ... we're writers. we're doing something that is inherently a generous act. we're exposing ourselves to the muse and to the things that frighten us. why do that if you're not willing to be generous? and paradoxically, almost ironically, it turns out that the more generous you are, the more money you make. but that's secondary. for me, the privilege of being generous is why i get to do this.

The sexiest thing in the entire world is being really smart. and being thoughtful and being generous. everything else is crap. i promise you. it's just crap that people try to sell to you to make you feel like less. so don't buy it. be smart. be thoughtful and be generous.

I don't mind being accused of being a bad comedian and i don't even mind being accused of being a bad talk-show host, but i never want to be accused of being an arrogant, pompous showbiz asshole.

My relationship with "pollyanna" is a very personal one, because pollyanna got me through my childhood.

I'd definitely say i end up being more attracted to darker roles. probably because i like darker movies and plus, just as an actor, i think it's always more fun to play the darker roles where you get to stretch your arms a little bit more. it's like therapeutic.

I believe in recognizing every human being as a human being--neither white, black, brown, or red; and when you are dealing with humanity as a family there's no question of integration or intermarriage. it's just one human being marrying another human being or one human being living around and with another human being.
