I am constantly torn between the attitude of the conscientious journalist who is a recorder and interpreter of the facts and of the creative artist who often is necessarily at poetic odds with the literal facts.

I wish i could sit back and say, 'oh, i'm gonna wait for a merchant-ivory film to come my way. or ivory-merchant. whatever it's called. but you just take what's given and then, hopefully, down the road you can be more choosy and only do, say, wayans brothers movies. that's my goal: to be more merchant-ivory-wayans.

The negative principle negates. the positive principle creates. the negative principle doubts. the positive principle believes. the negative principle accepts defeat. the positive principle goes for victory.

Facts are neutral until human beings add their own meaning to those facts. people make their decisions based on what the facts mean to them, not on the facts themselves. the meaning they add to facts depends on their current story … facts are not terribly useful to influencing others. people don’t need new facts—they need a new story.

It's a moral imperative, it's an economic imperative, and it is a security imperative. for we've seen how spikes in food prices can plunge millions into poverty, which, in turn, can spark riots that cost lives, and can lead to instability. and this danger will only grow if a surging global population isn't matched by surging food production. so reducing malnutrition and hunger around the world advances international peace and security - and that includes the national security of the united states.

I think we're all actors. there's this friend of mine who's a great drummer, and he said, "i never thought i'd be a drummer, but i got really good at it. i always feel like i'm an actor playing the drums." his real calling was that he was going to be a magician. that's what he felt like he wanted to do. if you decide to act like a journalist, you'll probably be a better journalist than just being a journalist. what you're doing is, you're taking the executive role and stepping outside yourself so that you're able to make more objective decisions.
