Smoking is, if not my life, then at least my hobby. i love to smoke. smoking is fun. smoking is cool. smoking is, as far as i am concerned, the entire point of being an adult. it makes growing up genuinely worthwhile. i am quite well aware of the hazards of smoking. smoking is not a healthful pastime, it is true. smoking is indeed no bracing dip in the ocean, no strenuous series of calisthenics, no two laps around the reservoir. on the other hand, smoking has to its advantage the fact that is a quiet pursuit. smoking is, in effect a dignified sport.

Yoga has trimmed my body in a way that the gym never could. i used to be a gym rat, but i switched to yoga and am now almost 10 pounds lighter. one important thing i've gotten from yoga is breathing. when i'm cooking, the top part of my body collapses down. it cuts off my diaphragm.

Staying in shape does not come easily, especially as you get older and you don't have as much time or energy to exercise. i used to be naturally skinny in high school and college. i was in cheerleading, ran track, and did gymnastics, so i had a built-in five-hour workout every day. lately, i've been doing pilates on the megaformer, which is like pilates on steroids.

I was one of those skeptics that thought that yoga was for kooks. now i'm on a very strict regimen. you know, i work out. that's another thing i've learned relaxin', sleep, yoga. i didn't know that that's as crucial as going hard, as workin' hard, as exercising hard. i never knew. i thought that, "okay, i gotta be at the gym like five hours everyday going balls to the wall." and what my yoga instructor, what my trainer, what they're trying to teach me is that, "no, it's sleep." that's important. that's just as important as workin' out.

I would like a wine. the purpose of the wine is to get me drunk. a bad wine will get me as drunk as a good wine. i would like the good wine. and since the result is the same no matter which wine i drink, i'd like to pay the bad wine price.

Everybody really knows what to do to have his life filled with joy. what is it? quit hating people; start loving them. quit being mad at people; start liking them. quit doing wrong; quit being filled with fear. quit thinking about yourself and go out and do something for other people. everybody knows what you have to do to be happy. but the wisdom of the test lies in the final words: "if ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them."
