Roxanne came along in '86, when i was doing a lot of stand-up. i auditioned for the movie, and of course i was a huge steve martin fan, so i really hoped i would get this part. i don't think there was any part in particular that i auditioned for. i just went in and talked with them. there were so many parts in there, and so many comedians ended up getting in that movie, playing different firemen and townspeople.

I read the script [ of 'steve jobs' movie ], and it was very, very good. i wasn't sure they would want me to be in the movie, but i auditioned for it. which i hadn't done in a few years. but i had auditioned in the previous few years for another movie that i did not get the part. and so my track record wasn't good. but i really wanted to audition because i was worried that i was going to blow it, and i wanted it to be on them for choosing me.

This rose became a bandanna, which became a house, which became infused with all passion, which became a hideaway, which became yes i would like to have dinner, which became hands, which became lands, shores, beaches, natives on the stones, staring and wild beasts in the trees, chasing the hats of lost hunters, and all this deserves a tone.

[david lean's] images stay with me forever. but what makes them memorable isn't necessarily their beauty. that's just good photography. it's the emotion behind those images that's meant the most to me over the years. it's the way david lean can put feeling on film. the way he shows a whole landscape of the spirit. for me, that's the real geography of david lean country. and that's why, in a david lean movie, there's no such thing as an empty landscape.

A few years ago i lost one of my dearest friends. he died at age 53 - heart attack. david is gone, but he was one of my very special friends. i used to say of david that if i was stuck in a foreign jail somewhere accused unduly and if they would allow me one phone call, i would call david. why? he would come and get me. that's a friend. somebody who would come and get you.

'flashforward' was on the outs when i was approached with 'happy endings.' i literally got the script on a friday, and on saturday morning i met with david caspe, jamie tarses, and the russo brothers. i took the role on that saturday, and on monday i was doing a table read. it all happened very fast, but it was super exciting.
