We must realize that violence is not confined to physical violence. fear is violence, caste discrimination is violence, exploitation of others, however subtle, is violence, segregation is violence, thinking ill of others and condemning others are violence. in order to reduce individual acts of physical violence, we must work to eliminate violence at all levels, mental, verbal, personal, and social, including violence to animals, plants, and all other forms of life.

I am a leader. leaders always get heat. they're always going against the grain. jimi hendrix got heat; bob marley got heat; miles davis got heat. every great artist got heat. heat means you're doing something right.

If what the philosophers say be true, that all men's actions proceed from one source; that as they assent from a persuasion that a thing is so, and dissent from a persuasion that it is not, and suspend their judgment from a persuasion that it is uncertain, so likewise they seek a thing from a persuasion that it is for their advantage.

The flock gets sight of a spot of blood on some chicken and they all go to peckin' at it, see, till they rip the chicken to shreds, blood and bones and feathers. but usually a couple of the flock gets spotted in the fracas, then it's their turn. and a few more gets spots and gets pecked to death, and more and more. oh, a peckin' party can wipe out the whole flock in a matter of a few hours, buddy, i seen it. a mighty awesome sight. the only way to prevent it—with chickens—is to clip blinders on them. so's they can't see.

I must remind you that starving a child is violence. suppressing a culture is violence. neglecting school children is violence. punishing a mother and her family is violence. discrimination against a working man is violence. ghetto housing is violence. ignoring medical need is violence. contempt for poverty is violence.

Violence never really deals with the basic evil of the situation. violence may murder the murderer, but it doesn’t murder murder. violence may murder the liar, but it doesn’t murder lie; it doesn’t establish truth. violence may even murder the dishonest man, but it doesn’t murder dishonesty. violence may go to the point of murdering the hater, but it doesn’t murder hate. it may increase hate. it is always a descending spiral leading nowhere. this is the ultimate weakness of violence: it multiplies evil and violence in the universe. it doesn’t solve any problems.
