The acts of the mind, wherein it exerts its power over simple ideas, are chiefly these three: 1. combining several simple ideas into one compound one, and thus all complex ideas are made. 2. the second is bringing two ideas, whether simple or complex, together, and setting them by one another so as to take a view of them at once, without uniting them into one, by which it gets all its ideas of relations. 3. the third is separating them from all other ideas that accompany them in their real existence: this is called abstraction, and thus all its general ideas are made.

There are more ideas on earth than intellectuals imagine. and these ideas are more active, stronger, more resistant, more passionate than "politicians" think. we have to be there at the birth of ideas, the bursting outward of their force: not in books expressing them, but in events manifesting this force, in struggles carried on around ideas, for or against them. ideas do not rule the world. but it is because the world has ideas (and because it constantly produces them) that it is not passively ruled by those who are its leaders or those who would like to teach it, once and for all, what it must think.

Why do i think that we, the intellectuals, are able to help? simply because we, the intellectuals, have done the most terrible harm for thousands of years. mass murder in the name of an idea, a doctrine, a theory, a religion - that is all "our" doing, "our" invention: the invention of the intellectuals. if only we would stop setting man against man - often with the best intentions - much would be gained. nobody can say that it is impossible for us to stop doing this.

Learn this great secret of life: what people call interruption or disturbance to their routine is just as much a part of living as the routine. to split life into two parts, one called routine and the other called interruption, is to be caught between them.

A free culture supports and protects creators and innovators. it does this directly by granting intellectual property rights. but it does so indirectly by limiting the reach of those rights, to guarantee that follow-on creators and innovators remain as free as possible from the control of the past. a free culture is not a culture without property, just as a free market is not a market in which everything is free. the opposite of a free culture is a "permission culture" -- a culture in which creators get to create only with the permission of the powerful, or of creators from the past.

He who cannot find time to consult his bible will one day find he has time to be sick; he who has no time to pray must find time to die; he who can find no time to reflect is most likely to find time to sin; he who cannot find time for repentance will find an eternity in which repentance will be of no avail; he who cannot find time to work for others may find an eternity in which to suffer for himself.
