I'm even stunned at some of the majors you can get in college these days. like you can major in the mating habits of the australian rabbit bat, major in leisure studies... okay, get a journalism major. okay, education major, journalism major. right. philosophy major, right. archeology major. i don't know, whatever it is. major in ballroom dance, of course. it doesn't replace work. how about a major in film studies? how about a major in black studies? how about a major in women studies? how about a major in home ec? oops, sorry! no such thing.

Scientific literacy is one of the underpinnings of everything i do. it's why i work with schools. it's why i teach at university. i do a lot of outreach to try and improve general scientific literacy, but the core of all scientific literacy is just literacy.

Knowledge about yourself binds, weighs, ties you down; there is no freedom to move, and you act and move within the limits of thatknowledge. learning about yourself is never the same as accumulating knowledge about yourself. learning is active present and knowledge is the past; if you are learning to accumulate, it ceases to be learning; knowledge is static, more can be added to it or taken away from it, but learning is active, nothing can be added or taken away from it for there is no accumulation at any time.

We need more concept-development and active involvement, less tuning forks, pulleys, and friction formulas - students know they'll never use those. they need more study of outer space and dna. they need more exciting teaching, more fair-minded encouragement, more career guidance, more mentorship. both students and teachers need more feedback. it would help if we stopped protecting bad teachers - it's very difficult to get rid of even sexual perverts let alone just bad teachers.

If you get health, then you have opportunity for literacy. health first, then literacy. once you have literacy, then you have a chance to bring in the new tools of communication. let people reach out and have access to the latest advances.

To make positive change requires lasting commitment, lasting commitment requires measurable targets, measurable targets requires detailed action plans, detailed action plans requires a goal you desire, desire requires a positive attitude to change your life, and the option to change your life requires work. byron pulsifer, from nothing ventured, nothing gained if you deny yourself commitment, what can you do with your life?
