A new kind of award has been added -- the deathbed award. it is not an award of any kind. either the recipient has not acted at all, or was not nominated, or did not win the award the last few times around. it is intended to relieve the guilty conscience of the academy members and save face in front of the public. the academy has the horrible taste to have a star, choking with emotion, present this deathbed award so that there can be no doubt in anybody's mind why the award is so hurriedly given. lucky is the actor who is too sick to watch the proceedings on television.

The winner is always part of the answer. the loser is always part of the problem. the winner always has a program. the loser always has an excuse. the winner says, "let me do it for you." the loser says, "that's not my job." the winner sees an answer for every problem. the loser sees a problem for every answer. the winner sees a green near every sand trap the loser sees two or three sand traps near every green. the winner says, "it may be difficult but it's possible." the loser says, "it might be possible but it's too difficult." be a winner.

While reading writers of great formulatory power — henry james, santayana, proust — i find i can scarcely get through a page without having to stop to record some lapidary sentence. reading henry james, for example, i have muttered to myself, "c’mon, henry, turn down the brilliance a notch, so i can get some reading done." i may be one of a very small number of people who have developed writer’s cramp while reading.

When i look at perfidia, i think, "that's a pulitzer prize winner. that's a national book award winner." it's not going to get it. it's going to be shelved in crime and it's just the way it is. i've done something that no one else has ever done; i've started out as a mystery writer, a police writer, and a crime writer, and i became something entirely different.

If you look at the recent nobel prize winners, one couldn't say that the work didn't matter and the political commitment did. who had ever heard of the egyptian writer naguib mahfouz? he is not politically involved. octavio paz is a great poet, also not politically involved. the nobel prize is for literature, for the quality of work over the years.

So often, we blame other people when, really, the problem is right down in here. i'm not happy. i don't know what's wrong. if i just had another job, i could be happy. if i just get married, i would be happy. well if i just wasn't married, i would be happy. well, if i just had some kids, i'll be happy. i'll be happy when these kids finally grow up and get out of here. if i had a bigger house, i would be happy. well, i got a big house. now if i just had a maid to clean, i'd be happy. well, now if i just had a maid i could get along with better, i'd be happy.
